Description

·         Performs a wide range of facility, equipment and machine operations associated with an EnergySolutions site/program/ project/function and or facility process(es). Ensures compliance with EnergySolutions policies and procedures and with local, state and federal regulations. Performs operations work as part of a team of semi-skilled and skilled workers (e.g., laborers; decontamination workers; and facility, equipment and process operators).

·         Operates a variety of equipment: (Level 1) hand and power tools; (Level 2) small, fixed-facility (light) equipment; (Level 3) medium weight equipment; (Level 4) heavy equipment and (Level 5) cranes. Decontaminates equipment, machinery and work areas.  Uses equipment to perform construction, demolition, material handling, waste treatment and soil remediation work. These tasks are necessary to maintain a healthy and productive workforce, to ensure smooth company operations and to ensure customer requirements are met.

·         Monitors and operates equipment using normal, abnormal and emergency operating procedures. Operates equipment within the bounds of the Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) as applicable.

·         Operates equipment under the direction of a Test Engineer, the Test Operations manager or a Shift Operations Manager in support of testing, commissioning and operations as applicable, according to location.

·         Works under the direction of the Operations Foreman as applicable, according to location.

·         Complies with all local, state and federal health and safety regulations and site health and safety requirements.

·         Complies with all requirements for wearing personal protective equipment while performing job duties.

·         Participates in procedure development and revision, job hazard analysis and safety walkdowns as applicable.

·         Uses a variety of heavy equipment to perform construction, demolition, material handling and soil remediation work.

·         Operates, services and makes minor adjustments to excavators, locomotives, road pavers, asphalt makers, steam rollers, large motor graders, backhoes, loaders, scrapers, large forklifts (cargo carriers), large haul/dump trucks and truck-mounted sludge/compost mixers.

·         Operates and makes minor repairs to winches, hoists, drums and other auxiliary mechanical equipment.

·         Helps develop procedures for required work. Gathers and analyzes data. Writes and submits a variety of reports.

·         Performs a wide range of batch plant operations working with heavy equipment used in an industrial operations setting after obtaining necessary qualification(s) and as directed.

    Sets and adjusts machine controls to regulate conditions such as material flow, temperature and pressure.

    Monitors material flow and instruments such as temperature and pressure gauges, indicators and meters to ensure optimal processing conditions.

    Starts agitators, shakers, conveyors, pumps and centrifuge machines. Turns valves and moves controls to admit, drain, separate, filter, clarify, mix and transfer materials.

    Examines samples visually or by hand to verify qualities such as clarity, cleanliness, consistency, dryness and texture.

    Collects samples of materials/products for laboratory analysis.

    Tests samples to determine viscosity, acidity, specific gravity or degree of concentration using test equipment such as viscometers, pH meters and hydrometers.

    Measures and weighs materials to be refined, mixed, transferred, stored or otherwise processed.

    Cleans and sterilizes tanks, screens, inflow pipes, production areas and equipment using hoses, brushes, scrapers and chemical solutions.

    Inspects machines and equipment for hazards, operating efficiency, malfunctions, wear and leaks. Requests repairs as needed.

    Maintains logs of instrument readings and test results and sends production information to computer databases.

·         Operates a control room(s) at an EnergySolutions waste processing facility [after obtaining necessary qualification(s) and as directed] to process radioactive waste materials including rolling, tipping and shredding operations.

    Maintains system balance, observes monitors and readouts and makes operational adjustments to control actions such as feed, conveyor, draft fan and stack.

    Ensures that—within the assigned process area—license compliance, conduct of operations and procedural compliance are maintained during operations.

    Maintains the training to act as an “authorized user” and holder of a radioactive material license.

·         May perform the work of an Operator 1, 2 or 3 as required.

·         May lead and direct the work of an Operator 1, 2 or 3.

·         May provide training to an Operator 1, 2 or 3 as needed and reviews the work of others as needed.

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

·         Basic computer skills, including the ability to operate equipment using HMI

·         Ability to successfully pass a fundamentals entry examination as applicable

·         Detailed knowledge of facility processes, operations and equipment

·         Detailed knowledge of machine construction, maintenance and deconstruction

·         Demonstrated ability to perform maintenance and repairs on fixed, small-scale industrial equipment used to perform job duties

·         Demonstrated ability to operate electronics and computers to diagnose and repair machines used to perform job duties

·         Demonstrated ability to handle  more complex work and schedule tasks assigned to Operator 1, 2 or 3 employees as appropriate

·         Ability to develop and communicate work steps required to maintain and repair medium weight equipment

·         Working knowledge of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems (if applicable to work performed)

·         Working knowledge of rigging practices (if applicable to work performed)

·         Working knowledge of heavy industrial equipment, machines and construction work and process operations such as batch plant, rotary and shredder operations

·         Ability to comprehend procedure and work package instructions as applicable

·         Ability to perform physically demanding work

·         Ability to lift up to 55 pounds

·         Ability to push and pull up to 35 pounds and carry up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder

·         Ability to use hands and feet to accomplish tasks as assigned

·         Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel, twist at the waist and balance

·         Ability to effectively communicate; speaking, reading, understanding, writing and hearing clear English; pass audiogram in hearing conservation program as required by location

·         Normal vision (with or without correction)

·         Ability to perceive depth and adjust focus; basic hand/eye coordination

·         Ability to see close and distance, basic colors/shades, and peripheral vision

·         Ability to work in extreme weather conditions and environments wherein there is exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, chemicals and mechanical and electrical hazards

·         Ability to work inside an office, outside, or in extreme temperatures

·         Ability to work with machinery vibration, power tools, moving objects, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces

·         Ability to work while wearing chemical resistant coveralls and respiratory protection

·         Ability to work with others and interact with the public; perform under deadline pressure

·         Ability to operate equipment and drive a vehicle

Minimum Qualifications and Years of Experience

Education

·         High School diploma or GED

 

Certifications

·         Ability to obtain applicable qualification card required (for a locomotive, excavator, compactor, bulldozer, batch plant, rotary, shredder, yardmaster or grader operator)

·         Valid driver’s license with a clean record required. Evidence of insurability required.

·         For jobs located at the Salt Waste location, must be qualified as a Salt Waste Processing Facility/Parsons Technology Center (PTC) Operator

 

Required Experience

·         A minimum of 12 months of related experience as an Operator 3 or equivalent offsite experience
